So I finally called Nightline...
Feb. 8th, 2005 09:59 amAnd you'll never guess why. Well, you might, but it's not something I ever thought I'd call them for, and believe me, I've had some thoughts.
I got stranded in Dunfermline.
It was my own damn fault, really. I kept putting off leaving, and then when I was at the bus station discovered that the last bus to St Andrews was earlier than I thought because they only go that late on Sundays. So I got on a bus to Dunfermline, because I'd looked at a timetable and seen that buses went from Glenrothes to St A's until eleven, and I thought, "that'll be fine." There were no more buses from Dunfermline to Glenrothes. "Oh shit," I thought. I panicked just a little.
It didn't help that my mobile was dead so I had to go find a payphone and of course I didn't have anybody's number written down. And I misremembered Kim's and I just did not want to phone home and admit to my stupidity because paternal would probably have driven out to get me or some such and I did not want that. I do not plan on informing him or Maureen of this little adventure for some time. (Inhabitants of parental home please take note.)
So I called Nightline because of the handy little keyring on my room key. And they looked up times for me, and were basically nice, though asked things that made me feel scared, such as, "are there any people around?" and, "would you feel safe going into that pub?" And I hadn't thought about it, and then I looked around and it was dark and I was in a strange place and I just wanted to go home dammit. Anyway. Went to the train station - luckily remembered there was a map in the bus station so did not have to get directions. Sat there for an hour. Got on the train to Glenrothes.
Unfortunately, the train station there is "Glenrothes with Thornton" - this, by the way, was where the train stopped, and it was the last train of the night and the other one was going to Edinburgh - and is five miles away from the bus station. I didn't know this, though once I got there I suspected, and there was a guy at the bus stop across the road so I went over and asked and he was very nice and helpful and suggested I get the bus to Kirkcaldy and train from there. So I crossed the road and stood at the bus stop and cried, and got on the bus when it came, and was the only person on it. And recognised when I was in Kirkcaldy and couldn't work out why and then remembered, "oh, the court case." And left the bus at the bus station and walked up to the train station and sat there for half an hour and got the very last train to Leuchars and then got a taxi to St Andrews.
And once I was in my room I had a stiff drink. I also called Nightline to say thank you, and I probably woke the guy up because it was half-past-midnight or so, but I didn't think of that. Oops.
And then I had a nine o'clock this morning. Which I went to, and was on time for, and I sat there and took notes despite the fact that my hands are trembling this morning. They haven't done that in a while. I'm hoping it's a delayed stress reaction. Or lack of sleep, or something, because if it's the drugs then I'll have to go back down and I'm sorry but I quite like being happy on occasion.
Um. Eek. So I didn't do the work I meant to do yesterday, but screw it, I'll do it today, but after I've had a nap, but I have another lecture, and it turns out both my modules are with the same guy, which is not too bad because he's at least a competent teacher. Also, he said he'd be away on Thursday, so I get the day off.
I haven't done the work I meant to do at all. I don't really care. I have started reading the Black Company books which my sister gave me at Christmas - I'd left them in Renfrew because my bags were crammed - and I like them.
Eek! Hands, stop trembling! It's bloody annoying!
