Sep. 12th, 2007 05:39 pmToday I handled over 1500 books, in the following fashion:
And at the end of the day, fill out the statistics sheet with how many books and how many not on list and how many missing from shelf and the shelfmark started with and the shelfmark ended with. *sigh*
Still, there are worse things I could be getting paid minimum wage for. A lot of very worse things. And now I'm working on my own I can listen to music all day, which is good.
But this job ends at the end of next week, so I'm applying for jobs and such, which is annoying and terrifying and such.
Now perhaps I will go and feed myself. Food is a good thing. Yes.
- Take book off shelf.
- Find barcode - usually on the first inner page, but sometimes a page or two later and occasionally on the front cover, where you will have looked straight past it because you weren't expecting it to be there.
- Check barcode. If barcode is the next on list, replace book on shelf and continue. If not, check a little further down the list; if it's there, find out why you got it out of order - check the shelfmark for multiples of the same one, or a typo, and check on the shelf for books out of order, or missing. If it's not, then write it down in the red folder (shelfmark, author, title, barcode, "Not on list") and put a slip in it (also reading "Not on list") then put it back on the shelf. Or, if the barcode is only slightly different than the one on the list - a V for a U, for example - write down "Different barcode" and the details thereof, instead.
- Repeat as necessary (i.e. several hours a day for all of this week and some of next. I have been doing this for a good few weeks already, but working as part of a pair, which is even worse, because you take down the book and read out the barcode and the other person checks the list; or you are the person checking the list, which is stultifying.)
