Sailors used to crush their biscuits with their elbows to get the weevils out of them. This is the "mental association" given to help remember the British Sign Language sign for biscuits, which is cupping your hand at your other elbow and tapping twice.

I've been doing an online course - just finished it, actually, and got full marks in all the assessments - in basic BSL. I'll have to revise fairly frequently to keep up with it. And now, as I so often do, I'm building castles in the air, thinking, hey, I could do more of this and then I could do this and then that could be my job, I could be an interpreter...

Still unemployed. I might pick up some casual work at the post centre in the run-up to Christmas - I'm on their waiting list, and I went to the induction session yesterday. It was crappy, actually, because I was supposed to go in the morning but I was late because I was unlucky with transport; I'd been over-confident due to good luck when I went to register last week. So then I hung around the large Tesco nearby for three hours until it was time to go back for the afternoon session. And I went to the cafe first, and I was hanging about the counter, freaking out a bit, and this woman started talking to me, and it was, and I was, agh. Then I got some shopping, stood in the book aisle reading for a bit, bought a puzzle magazine, went back to the cafe, then went to the session, where we signed forms, watched a DVD and got a cursory orientation - there are the toilets, there is the First Aid room, any questions?

Still applying for jobs, but I haven't even got to an interview yet. I have far too much education and far too little experience and I'm far too honest about my mental health problems. I've started applying for part-time as well as full-time, though, because I could keep living like a student for a while, and do signing courses on the side, and then wind up with a qualification of immediate use. And that would be cool.

And tomorrow the man is coming to fix the central heating so we will have no hot water for two days. Woo.
