They did just completely erase her character arc. I think what really bugs me, at the moment, is her complete lack of agency in the whole thing: Donna doesn't get to make a choice. I don't think she would have chosen to give up those memories. The Doctor takes them from her, and yes, I see why, yes, anything is better than dying... yes, she seems happy, and maybe things will go better for her with her family knowing what she's capable of and respecting her a bit more, but. It should be Donna's choice, and instead she's a victim of circumstance and manipulation.
And I can't see how anybody who thought about it for more than ten seconds could be happy about that stuff. I don't know what the hell RTD was smoking.
