so I downloaded a few clips from "Never Leave Me".
I'm annoyed.
It doesn't seem as good as "Sleeper", for starters. And then there's Buffy.
Of course, being me, I'm complaining about her attitude to Spike. She exhibits her caring side most of the time, though she's relatively calm about the whole situation.
He tells her to tie him down tighter, by the way, for good reason, but... yeah, sorry.
She hand-feeds him blood, checks up on him, talks to him a little... then when he starts talking back, other than giving her info about the killings, the soul, when he starts telling her about hate, she closes off and starts... aargh. The thing is, I totally understand it, because he has the beautiful line, "I have come to redefine the words pain and suffering since I fell in love with you." But my reaction would be hurt, as opposed to her exasperated sigh. She acknowledges that she used him, that she hated herself and took it out on him - that's great. He tells her he now understands violence and self-loathing - scornful!Buffy returns.
I'm realising more and more that the Spike in my head is not the one in JW's, ME's, JM's or anyone else involved in it. Which really pisses me off. I'm actually quite worried that when I see S7 for real, I'll start subscribing to the prescribed viewpoints. Which would be bad.
but to continue...
the only reason I like Morphy, really, is getting two Spikes. I think it's a slightly cheap plot device, I hate that they use it to manipulate Spike into bad-guy role again, I... ack. Still, getting evil-Spike without Spike going bad - total wish-fulfilment for JM, methinks.
So Morphy shows, Spike gets loose (appearing to be stronger than ever before, which is slightly worrying - I'm guessing it's a "pure demon" thing, take away the Spikeness and all you have left is the beast), attacks Andrew then gets thrown off by Buffy. He's lying on the floor looking shocked. She boots him in the face to knock him out. (Nice camera-work, there, by the way - angled from the floor so you see her foot coming down. OK, it's cliched, and it's also strangely reminiscent of the Hallowe'en ep from S3, but still...) And again, I understand why she does it, that he is a threat and she needs to sort out the others before she deals with him, but... he's obviously back to being him. he's obviously there. And OK, we can see Morphy-Spike shaking his head right behind her, but she can't, and she does it in a somewhat vengeful manner...
next up, Spike in chains. yum. Buffy comes down and cleans him up, doing the caring shtick again. He has a go at convincing her to kill him, and I'm not sure how much of his speech about what he's capable of is true. Some of it must be. But it just... I never saw him as rapist-torturer-etc. I never did. Angelus, yes. Dru, yes. Spike, no. I'm sure I'm being a naive little girlie, but still... Some of the speech does smack of him trying to convince her. Then he tells her he's only alive because she can hate him enough to be the slayer. Buffy says she "doesn't hate like that". Uh-huh. Keep telling yourself that. And then she's trying to convince him that it wasn't his fault, it was Morphy. Then tells him "You're alive because I saw you change. ... You faced the monster inside of you, and you fought back. You risked everything to be a better man, and you can be. You are. You may not see it, but I do. I believe in you, Spike." Which is a lovely little pep talk.
Where the hell was it last season?!
and then we have the big finale. oh yes.
leather straps and sharp blades and dripping blood and two Spikes.
somewhat amusing that his reactions to pain are slightly reminiscent of the sex scenes.
then Morphy-Buffy - "I was going to bleed Andrew, but you look a lot better with your shirt off."
effects are a bit cheesy - they have this big seal thing, opened with the blood, and it's so obviously a model in the close-up of it moving. It's really bad. The blood almost works, though.
having read the wildfeed - not too happy with it. And they haven't resolved the cliffhanger from "Sleeper", 'cause it was such a doozy.
so that was fun... man, I still want to write crazy!Spike. but I just can't. damn.
